Benefits of Judo
  1. Judo is a contact sport that teaches: physically - balance, coordination, efficiency of movement, skills of failing safely and self defence and mentally - self confidence, respect and self discipline.
  2. The sport of Judo is unique in that it teaches the prevention of injury by practising techniques of failing safely. The failing skills of Judo can be utilised in ball sports such as: Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer, Netball and Basketball (to name a few) to reduce the incidence of injury. In Judo you not only need to move your own body efficiently, but someone else's as well - this develops good balance, concentration and agility.
  3. Judo, for both men and women, since 1964 has full Olympic and Commonwealth Games status and is growing very fast in popularity throughout the world.
  4. Judo was introduced into Australia in 1928 and since then has been expanding significantly every year.
  5. Judo builds character and self confidence and offers considerable personal rewards through training and competition. It is not the kind of sport that says winning is the only thing worth doing, but the sort of sport the Greeks of the fifth century B.C. would have understood as a mix of philosophy and physical culture. The model of kalos kaghatos (fit and clever) still exist in judo.
  6. Judo is one of the most disciplined sports in the world where respect for a coach and, most importantly, for other participants is a fundamental value. One example is bowing at both start and finish of the contest and every exercise in pairs which is a Japanese way of showing respect as the handshake is in the Western World.
  7. One of the primary values of judo training is learning self-control and self-discipline. Judo players learn to fall and throw properly under supervision, which results in judo being considered a low injury sport. The last thing a judo player wants to do is to injure the opponent.
  8. There is no questions that judo is a very effective means of self defence for both men and women.
  9. Every judo technique has a Japanese name which is widely used by coaches instead of English names. This would be an excellent opportunity to teach students a little bit of Japanese.
  10. The variety of skills acquired from Judo are transferred to many other sports. In particular, breakfalls can be used to prevent injuries in many contact sports such as rugby and other football codes.
